Rutgers Publishes Two Volumes Celebrating Decades of Ocean Observing Partnerships

New Brunswick, NJ — July 2, 2025 — Rutgers University has announced the publication of two new books chronicling its decades-long collaborations with two pioneering ocean technology companies: CODAR Ocean Sensors and Teledyne Webb Research.

The two volumes highlight the transformative impact of these partnerships on coastal ocean observing science, education, and operational forecasting.

“These books capture more than twenty years of innovation, teamwork, and discovery,” said Hugh Roarty, Research Project Manager at Rutgers’ Center for Ocean Observing Leadership (RU-COOL). “CODAR’s SeaSonde HF radar systems and Teledyne Webb Research’s autonomous gliders have allowed us to map and monitor the ocean in ways that were simply not possible before. Together, this partnership has enabled cutting edge research, helped train students and have become critical tools in regional ocean observation networks linked into a globally connected system.”

The CODAR volume compiles peer-reviewed scientific papers demonstrating how Rutgers and CODAR worked together to deploy shore-based radar to measure real-time surface currents — supporting applications from search and rescue and oil spill response to ecosystem management and climate research.  The companion Teledyne Webb volume documents Rutgers’ collaboration with Teledyne Webb Research to develop, deploy, and refine autonomous underwater gliders — versatile vehicles that gather critical subsurface data over vast distances and long timeframes. This partnership helped pave the way for one of the world’s largest sustained academic glider operations.

Both books also highlight Rutgers’ commitment to training the next generation of ocean scientists and engineers. Students have gained hands-on experience with these technologies in the lab, at sea, and through coursework — fueling careers that now support a wide range of coastal and offshore industries, government agencies, and academic institutions.
