Rutgers University is proud to welcome PhD student Jonay Suárez-Ramírez as a visiting scholar this fall. Jonay joins us from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where he is pursuing his PhD in the Image Processing and Computer Graphics Division, part of the University Institute of Cybernetics, Enterprise and Society (IUCES). His research focuses on deep learning computer vision for marine environments.
During his time at Rutgers, Jonay will collaborate with researchers at the Center for Ocean Observing Leadership (RUCOOL) to advance methods that improve real-time ocean monitoring and forecasting. His work aims to enhance the accuracy and operational use of oceanographic data—key components for improving marine safety, coastal resilience, and environmental management.
“We’re excited to have Jonay here this semester,” said Dr. Hugh Roarty, Research Project Manager at RUCOOL. “His expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning will contribute to advancing the capabilities of our coastal observing network.”
Jonay’s visit reflects Rutgers’ continued commitment to fostering international research partnerships and providing opportunities for scientists to contribute to global ocean research. His collaboration is supported by ongoing initiatives between Rutgers and his employer QAISC focused on advancing marine technology and data-driven environmental solutions.
Please join us in welcoming Jonay Suárez-Ramírez to Rutgers and wishing him a productive and engaging semester.
