Dear Principal & Educators,

The students of the Rutgers Marine Sciences Program would like to invite students of all ages to become a part of history.  Students and educators are invited to participate in our ‘Letters Across the Globe’ program. We are sending an autonomous underwater robot – The Redwing – around the globe on a never before attempted mission, and we want you to join us on this remote research opportunity!

Sending Letters:

Write a letter or send a picture to include in the hull of the glider! Students are invited to write short letters or send pictures answering the question – ‘what does the ocean mean to you?’ Letters can be written to any length, language, or writing ability. We have three working template options for these letters, guppy, lionfish, and tuna, which offer flexibility for all students to participate.  Take a look at what will work best for you and your students. Illustrations are welcome for all levels!

For educators, we only ask that submissions are checked for appropriateness and to ensure the privacy and safety of all students involved. This assignment can be done in class, online, or at home. Students are encouraged to include their first name and age, but no other personal information. Submissions should be shared as PDF files.

Letters contributed to this project will be uploaded onto a USB, which will travel inside the Redwing to each of her stops in her groundbreaking attempt to circumnavigate the globe. Our hope is that at each location, the materials entered by students of previous stops can be shared to create a network of connections for places that may otherwise never interact.
