We hope that you will join our team so that together we can meet the environmental and educational challenges facing the world today. Your support is critical to enabling high risk and high reward research, developing students to be the leaders of tomorrow and bringing the public with us into the ocean. Even the smallest gift makes a big difference.

Why invest in RU COOL? RU COOL for 24 years has been a world leader in ocean science, education programs and providing the public access to the world's ocean. Our team is dedicated to building a global presence to discover and communicate exciting and critical science about our planet for the benefit of society. We hope that you will join our team so that together we can meet the environmental and educational challenges facing the world today. Your support is critical to enabling high risk and high reward research, developing students to be the leaders of tomorrow and bringing the public with us into the ocean. Even the smallest gift makes a big difference.  For more information on how you can help RUCOOL, please contact Melissa McKillip at mckillip@aesop.rutgers.edu.

Support Students

RU COOL is dedicated revolutionizing education in order to train the next generation of leaders through undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral education. Our philosophy is that the best learning is by doing and therefore students are full members of RU COOL's expeditions in the ocean.

Your Support Can Provide:

Student internships: RU COOL has a rich history of providing student experiences in the lab and in the field that change a student's life by expanding career aspirations and developing self-confidence. These experiences often make RU COOL students sought after upon graduation (see some of their testimonials).

New Education Programs: DMCS is an innovator in developing new education programs based on reading and doing! For example RU COOL undergraduate students learned about ocean navigation and then went made history as the first group to pilot an underwater robot across the Atlantic Ocean. The robot (The Scarlet Knight RU27), declared a national historic artifact by the White House, is currently on display in the Smithsonian Ocean Hall in Washington DC. Help support new education initiatives such as the new global Challenger mission, development of technical certificates in ocean observing technologies, to developing sustained undergraduate participation in long term funded research programs.

Graduate Students: RU COOL attracts world-class graduate students and has a rich history of producing leaders in academia and business (view 10 years of first author papers published by graduate students and postdoctoral researchers). Currently only a small percentage of the eligible students are accepted to the lab despite that a growing need more graduate students. Your financial contributions can provide a graduate student stipend and your support will ensure that we develop the researchers of tomorrow. This investment in the next generation provides a research legacy that last for decades after the gift.

Support RU COOL Scientists

RU COOL is anchored by world leading collaborative scholars. Your gifts are crucial to retaining world-leading faculty at Rutgers and potentially bringing new leaders to expand RU COOL. Your support can help by providing:

An Endowed Chair for Ocean Observation: The gift of an Endowed Chair is an honor for exceptional leadership in research and education. The Endowed Chair is a permanent gift that will support teaching and research providing a permanent legacy of the donor on Rutgers campus.

Research Infrastructure: Oceanography is an equipment intensive field. Success in winning federal support is often based on faculty having access to unique instruments and sensors that provide them a competitive advantage when competing for research funds. Replacing aging equipment is a huge challenge for our group. A philanthropic contribution of the funds for a research area of interest to a donor is an excellent opportunity to enable RU COOL to leverage larger funds to conduct research (Link to RU COOL research page). For example, a generous gift of glider enabled the successful crossing of the Atlantic ocean (link to RU 27 web site), which at the time was considered to risky for federal funds. There is a wide range of needs and even the smallest contribution can make a significant difference.

Support the Global Challenger Glider Initiative

full map 850

RU COOL was issued, in December 2009, a challenge to build a global network and community of glider operators to improve our understanding of a changing ocean. This effort, known as the Challenger Glider Mission, is a historic initiative to deploy and then have undergraduate students operate a globally coordinated expedition to sample Earth's oceans. This effort is dedicated to first modern oceanography expedition, which the historic 1872 voyage of the HMS Challenger. 140 years later, RU COOL is now focused on building a global network of gliders to understand a changing global ocean. We ask you to join to conduct the Challenger Mission.

The mission will consist of 16 virtually simultaneous flights that will replicate the HMS Challenger's original route; it will enlist the efforts of land-based oceanographers who will control and operate this global fleet in coordination. The project to be coordinated from RU COOL and partners Universities around the word will focus on creating a new global collaborative generation among oceanographers and climate change specialists for the shared goal of better understanding the oceans. We ask your support to conduct the Challenger mission and lets us all make history.
