Carbon biogeochemistry, the focus of my research, is a quick way of describing the complex biological and physical interactions related to carbon. In general, I am interested in understanding the mechanisms behind the dynamic nature of our environment. More specifically, I study the biological, physical, and chemical interactions that transport carbon from the sea surface to the sediments. From the big picture perspective, I study the earth's natural mechanism of large-scale carbon sequestration. In practice though, I study changes in phytoplankton physiology and how these changes affect the ability of aggregates of phytoplankton cells to settle out of the sea surface. More recently, as my thesis work has evolved, I have been finding myself drawn to trying to understand the biogeochemistry of the fastest changing regions of our planet - the poles. See more info on my personal page.
