Department of Homeland Security

Homeland Security leverages resources within federal, state, and local governments, coordinating the transition of multiple agencies and programs into a single, integrated agency focused on protecting the American people and their homeland. More than 87,000 different governmental jurisdictions at the federal, state, and local level have homeland security responsibilities. The comprehensive national strategy seeks to develop a complementary system connecting all levels of government without duplicating effort. Homeland Security is truly a “national mission.”

Department of Defense

The Department of Defense is America's oldest and largest government agency. With our military tracing its roots back to pre-Revolutionary times, the Department of Defense has grown and evolved with our nation. Today, the Department, headed by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, is not only in charge of the military, but it also employs a civilian force of thousands. With over 1.3 million men and women on active duty, and 684,000 civilian personnel, we are the nation's largest employer. Another 1.1 million serve in the National Guard and Reserve forces. More than 2 million military retirees and their family members receive benefits.

Mid-Atlantic Bight - National Undersea Research Center (MAB-NURC)

NOAA's Undersea Research Center for the Middle Atlantic Bight region (MAB) seeks to understand the processes governing change and stability at spatial and temporal scales not obtainable with conventional oceanographic techniques. Since its creation in 1992, the Center has focused on establishing Long-term Ecosystem Observatories (LEO's) that enable multi-disciplinary science using in situ observations and manipulations. At LEO-15, scuba and seafloor observatory studies have described recruitment of fish and benthic invertebrates, and the effects of waves and currents on sediment and pollutant transport, seafloor characteristics, and benthic community dynamics.
